Crazy JetLev Water Powered Jet Pack San Diego Flight and Fail Video

Ironically, the world of water sports can be a bit dry. There are boats, jet-skis, waverunners, blah-bitty-blah-bitty-blah. Snore. I want something that can turn me into an aquatic superman. Something that combines water and flying, but without the peanuts. Something exhilarating. Earlier this year, I was checking out the San Diego Yacht and Boat Show for San Diego Sailing. One of the highlights of the show was checking out the amazing JetLev Water Jet Pack.

You’ve probably seen Jet Pack footage before. Jet packs or rocket packs have been around for decades. The problem with them is A) You need to be a NASA test pilot to fly them, and B) If there’s a problem or you run out of fuel, you go splat. Both significant drawbacks as far as I am concerned. Jet Lev’s new water powered jet packs promise to make relatively safe flight open to the masses. Or, if not the masses, then anyone willing to pony up a few hundred bucks for a flight experience. If you prefer to buy, the JetLev R200 was running around $100,000 a pop at press time!

Jet Pack flight can be yours with the JetLev

The JetLev jet pack uses a remote jet ski/boat unit that tags along behind you in the water. That jet ski sucks up water and pumps it up through a flexible 33′ hose to the pilot. The pilot then can fly around with nothing but two jets of water being furiously pumped through two nozzles that control the flight path.

Although I got some great footage of the JetLev in action, I missed an epic video fail when the news was covering the boat show and a JetLev launch in particular earlier that morning. Let’s just say a kill switch got killed at a really inopportune time:

If you’re sold on flying around with a JetLev in Southern California, here are some details taken from the JetLev Southwest website. Note that they’re quoted as of December, 2011, so pricing and details may change. If you take the flight school, beware of that kill switch though!
